A

s 2017 draws to a close I can’t
help but reflect on what has
been a rather interesting and
exciting year. A year that sees
me in a new editor’s chair, for one thing,
and with a landmark birthday just a
couple of weeks away. Some of my less
kind colleagues have intimated that 2018
should be a doddle as it’ll be downhill
from now on!
I’ve always been quite in to New
Year’s resolutions. Perhaps because
there is so much about me that I need to
improve. But aside from the usual tedious
pursuit of weight loss and more exercise
(intentions that will probably be out of
the window before February arrives) I
find it generally beneficial to plan a new
experience.
I’m hoping that one of those will be
to introduce my young children to the
waterways. They have shown a real
fascination for the colourful craft within
the pages of Canal Boat so fingers

crossed in the coming months the seeds
will be sown for a couple more boating
enthusiasts of the future.
Another resolution is to get involved as
a volunteer on a local waterways project.
Volunteer labour is a vital resource in the
ongoing health and success of our canals
and rivers – not to mention a driving
force behind the continued restoration
and improvement that is going on across
the country. We have a roundup of some
of the big projects that the Waterway
Recovery Group will be tackling in
2018 but if you want to get involved,
whether on a WRG camp or locally as
part of a ‘towpath taskforce’ with the
Canal & Rivers Trust there are plenty of
opportunities. Visit http://www.waterways.org.
