Motor Boat & Yachting — February 2018

(Greg DeLong) #1
FINDME A USED...

Designed by John Bennett and
moulded by Aquafibre (it was also
used by Broom for its 9/70 back
in the ’90s), the hull of the Haines
335 was unusually available in two
versions.
The ‘Coastal’ is fitted with a single
engine and designed to be used
for inshore and inland work, and
an ‘Offshore’ that was constructed
with a much heavier build and
fitted with twin engines for, as the
name makes clear, predominantly
offshore work.

INTERIOR
Both versions shared the same deck
and interior layout, which is classic
aft cabin. It offers tremendous privacy
as it puts the two sleeping areas
at opposite ends of the boat, both
with their own heads (although the
forward heads is not ensuite, it’s
arranged as a day heads). Vee berth
or a central double bed was offered
for the forward cabin, the galley
is a particularly good size and
the saloon converts to create
two further occasional berths.

EXTERIOR
The helm is positioned on the aft
deck rather than on the saloon roof
in the form of a flybridge, which
keeps the air draught down. Folding
windscreens reduce this even further,
handy for getting under bridges. With
no lower helm, the ability to enclose
this area with a full canopy is useful.

PERFORMANCE
With the largest twin Yanmar 140hp
option, the Haines 335 would do about
20 knots, but of course the single

Perkins isn’t going to lift it on to the
plane, so hull displacement speed is
going to be the limiting factor. Figure
on about 8 knots with this engine.
Engine access in a bay designed for
twins is particularly good. Naturally
aspirated (rather than turbocharged)
and a straight shaft keeps it simple.

SEAKEEPING
A shallow hull keel keeps the 335
tracking steady at low speed and
the Vetus bow thruster is present
and correct for close handling.
