Editorial

When I first mooted the idea of publishing a story on the true cost
of running a boat, the collective intake of breath could be heard
four streets away. Even the MBY website forum was divided on the
matter, some welcoming a more open approach to the awkward
subject of money, others worrying that revealing the full cost might
put people off boating altogether (in some cases their own wives!)
My own feeling is that we shouldn’t shy away from the cost of
running a boat, nor should we underestimate the joy and pleasure
it brings. Hoodwinking newcomers into buying a boat they can’t
afford to run is likely to end with burnt fingers all round and
a negative view of our pastime. Giving them a realistic heads-up
should enable them to cut their cloth accordingly in the hopes they
catch the boating bug and move up the ladder when finances allow.
Not surprisingly, I asked people who manage to run nice boats
on relatively modest budgets to share their stories, partly because
it proves that you don’t have to be rolling in the stuff to run your
own boat and partly because a lot of them have found creative
ways of keeping costs down – something we can all benefit from.
But perhaps the most important thing to remember is that
a boat is far more than just a big boy’s toy. It’s also a second home,
a constant source of fabulous family holidays and a much needed
pressure relief valve from the stresses and strains of everyday life.
Add up the cost of running a fancy car (the depreciation is the
real killer), buying a second home and booking a couple of family
holidays each year, and suddenly a boat looks like a cost-effective
option. However you justify it, it’s not the amount you spend that
matters, it’s the pleasure you get from it. And that, for me, is priceless.
