Are you sitting
comfortably? The
answer if you are on
the P400 Matrix will
be a resounding ‘yes’

To paraphrase Vesper Lynd in Casino
Royale, ‘There are helm seats and
there are helm seats. This is the latter’.
The DAME judges certainly agree,
having recently awarded it the DAME
Design Award 2017 in the ‘Interior
equipment, furnishings, materials
and electrical fittings used in cabins’
category. So what does it take to
win such a snappily titled award?
Well, let’s start with a seat squab
that can, not to put too fine a point
on it, mould itself precisely to the
contours of your bottom. It does this
by utilising beads which can move
around and compress, forming
a mould of the perfect shape in just
a few seconds, which is then captured
using a vacuum pump (on the
chair base, not on you!) This gives
‘a sensation of total contact with
the surface, so that the user feels
completely supported by the
cushion when sitting on it’ and
it can be repeated on the same
surface thousands of times.
Are you now sitting comfortably?
Then let’s begin on the rest. The seat

support (of polished stainless steel
or powder-coated aluminium) can
be raised or lowered manually or
electrically, depending on chosen
specification. A manual fore and aft
slider adjusts reach, the chair can
swivel, the backrest can be fixed
or electrically adjusted, the headrest
(in vinyl or leather with optional logo
or pattern) is manually adjusted
for height (and backlit, naturally)
and the footrest (aluminium with
an upholstered edge) can be
adjusted or tilted out of the way.
Finally, we come to the armrests,
fixed or folding, in narrow or wide
format, the latter able to incorporate
joysticks, throttles, USB output and
cup or mobile phone holders. The
whole thing is available in multiple
fabrics with choices of padding and
stitching with a glassfibre backshell
in a choice of shades. It is, frankly,
the ultimate helm seat and the only
question you need to ask is whether
the rest of your boat can possibly
live up to it? From €5,000.

PowerRay

submersible drone

When at anchor, submerge yourself in this adult ‘toy’

There are no doubt plenty of sound,
practical reasons to justify buying
a PowerRay, such as checking your
sterngear, but let’s face it, you’re
just going to use it as an amusing
toy when you’re at anchor.
Personally, I’ve never had a problem
embracing my inner child and I’d
certainly be very happy to play with
this. It’s a submersible drone, but
unlike the flying variety, this one links
via a 40m cable that hooks into your
smartphone or tablet, recording 4K

UHD images to its SD card while
streaming real time 1080P into
the palm of your hand. You can
take 12-megapixel photos too.
Incredibly, it’ll dive to 30m, where
its built-in headlights will come in
handy. It will even tell you the water
temperature, its depth and fish
distribution, handy for the optional
fishing tackle decision. Plus, it’s
surely the ultimate lazy man’s way
to go scuba diving? From €1,699.

Scanstrut Rokk

Charge +

One port that millennials

won’t mind visiting

This isn’t the first waterproof USB
port from Scanstrut that we’ve
featured in New Tech, but this
new version does come with some
useful updates, plus it allows me to
bang on about millennials and their
vapid reliance on social media to
gain any meaning to their life. Again.
A twin socket unit like the previous
model, the big news is that it charges
three times faster than before. It’s
also more waterproof, rated to IPX6
protection which means it can handle
heavy rain or direct splashing with
a hosepipe – and interestingly, it
maintains its resistance to moisture
even with devices connected.
Finally, it has a smaller and lower
profile than Scanstrut’s previous
version, meaning that when you finally
capitulate and fit one as the only way
to bribe your kids to come boating
with you, it won’t spoil the look of
your boat too much. From £34.99.
