When a boatbuilder of Colin Messer’s
experience tells you that this is his
best-ever project, one he has waited
two decades to do, you have to sit
up and listen. The boat is one of only
two remaining tenders to the J-Class
yachts in the 1930s. The restoration
has been a money-no-object stab at
perfection. Every piece of hardware,
for instance, is gold-plated, just as it
was originally, and the engine is a

This isn’t the first taste of awards victory for boatbuilder Win Cnoops, who trades as Star Yachts in the
historic Underfall Boatyard in Bristol (hence the name). His partnership with Andrew Wolstenholme in
building attractive, semi-displacement, stepped-sheer motor-cruisers in strip-plank and epoxy has earned
him that rare treasure in the world of modern traditional boatbuilding – and that’s a proper niche to call his
own. The 32 and 16, both for the same owner, are his biggest and smallest in the Bristol series to date.
