Classic Boat - May 2018

(ff) #1
CLASSIC BOATER OF THE YEAR

MAX
CAMPBELL
There seems to be a bit of a
fix-it-and-go theme emerging in
the Classic Boater of the Year
award. Your chosen winner two
years ago was Leo Goolden, who
restored a Folkboat and sailed it
to Antigua. This time, you voted
for Max Campbell, stepson of
boatbuilder Dave Cockwell, who
restored a Clyst-Class sloop,
Flying Cloud, in Cornwall. With
that done, Max took of south a
few weeks before his 21st
birthday, with pal Harry, on a
sailing ‘surfari’ of the French and
Spanish coasts. Harry was
benevolently kidnapped “by a girl
in a van” but Max decided to
carry on, crafted his own
windvane using bits found in a
local boatyard and sailed his
22-footer to Grenada, sufering a
bad skin burn en route, but
savouring every moment of the
adventure of a lifetime.

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
JAMES WHARRAM
James Wharram hardly needs introducing.
In 1956, he made the first Atlantic crossing
by multihull, the 23ft 6in (7.2m) Tangaroa
designed and built himself for £200, and
crewed by two German girls. In 1959 they
were the first to cross the north Atlantic
from west to east (NY to Wales) by
multihull, the 40ft (12.2m) Rongo. Since
then, he has sold more than 10,000 of his
plans for cruising multihulls worldwide,
and some consider him to be the father
of modern multihull sailing. More than
that, James has always espoused a ‘less
is more’ philosophy, looking for simpler
ways to build and rig his afordable boats.
Of particular note is his simple, but highly
ecient, Wharram Wingsail rig. He is 90
this year and shows no sign of stopping.
He is, simply, a living legend.

The sense of freedom was
irrepressible. A fortnight before my 21st
birthday, with no real plan, we loaded up
Flying Cloud and sailed south
