AP’sstallthus:‘Photographyhas,within
thelastfewyears,becomesopopularwith
amateurs,thatatthepresenttimetheir
numbervastlyexceedsthatofprofessional
photographers.Recruitsofeithersex– for
hereletussaythatladiesmakeexcellent
manipulators– aredailybeingaddedto
therankofthosepractisingthispleasing
andtrulyfascinatingart,whichis notto
bewonderedatwhenoneremembersthat
someofthemostsuccessfulphotographs
thathaveeverbeentakenarethework
ofamateurs.’
HarrisStonewasthesparkthat
ignitedtheflamebutit wasfannedbya
successionofgreateditorswhofollowed.
PerhapsthemostnotablewereAlfred
HorsleyHintonandFJMortimer.Hinton
wasa foundingmemberofthehugely
influentialLinkedRingBrotherhood,a
passionateadvocateforpictorialismand
is widelyregardedasthefatherofBritish
landscapephotography.
A workaholic,Hintonpassedawayin
1908 atthetenderageof45,tobereplaced
byMortimer,theeditorofitsweeklyrival
PhotographicNews, whichAPpromptly
boughtandabsorbed.Mortimerwent
ontobecomeAP’slongestservingeditor,
dedicating 36 yearsofhislifetothe
magazine– a reignthatonlyendedwhen
hewaskilledonhiswaytowork,atAP’s
StamfordStreetoffice,bya German V-
rocket that hit Waterloo Station.
