Ken Tofield
‘England vs West
Germany’, 1966,
Press Association
I am a massive football fan and this
image is my all-time favourite, as I
remember the 1966 World Cup final
happening when I was a kid. I love the
relatively clean composition considering
all the excitement going on around the
photographer, and Bobby Moore’s
expression – what a gent. There was no
rubbing the Germans’ noses in it, or
running around without shirts, showing
off. Players seemed to be more
dignified back then, compared to the
highly paid prima donnas you see
playing today. What a year 1966 was

  • full of optimism and togetherness,
with people from all walks of life coming
together to support England. We could
do with some of that spirit now.

Phil Manning
‘Flag on the Reichstag’,
1945, by Yevgeny Khaldei
This year marks 80 years since the
outbreak of World War II, so I thought
this would be a fitting image to include.
It is an incredible picture which captures
the epic struggle in the final battle for
Berlin and the heroism of the Red
Army, as well as the damage done to
the very heart of the Third Reich at the
end of the war. It turns out the image
was recreated after the fighting to take
the Reichstag had ceased, and the ‘flag’
was actually stiched together from
several tablecloths by the
photographer’s uncle, but this doesn’t
matter so much to me as it is still an
incredible image. Let’s not forget, it was
produced as a propaganda image for
Stalin’s regime; they weren’t particularly
worried about photographic ethics, or
ethics at all for that matter, so long as it
served their purpose. One of the iconic
images of the War.
