ANNUAL STUDENT COMPETITION

First Place

Han Jong Lee

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA
HANLEESART.COM

I grew up in Seoul, South

Korea, where I also graduated

from Kang Nam University

before making my way to San

Francisco. After Rain is an

expression of my emotional

journey through the city. It’s

a place I’ve come to see my

refl ection and a city that’s

allowed me to fi nd peace with

the diversity of life’s experi-

ences. There are various

lightings, colors and forms in

cities, best represented on a

rainy day. I wanted to express

San Francisco with its light

and refl ections. MW

Eliana

Colachis Glass

SEATTLE, WASHINGTON
ELIANA.WORK

I loved my elementary art

class, but was less happy

with my high school classes,

but you can learn a lot

from mediocre art classes.

Working with people who get

in your way is great practice

for learning how to solve

problems.

Out of Nowhere was my

fi rst watercolor rendered in a

photorealistic style. I painted

two dark triangles, a paral-

lelogram, a pentagram and

a few line edges. When I

paint with watercolor, I tend

to procees this way: I choose

the fi rst color, apply it where

I see it and then fi nd all the

other places where that color

appears again before moving

to the next color. MW

Second Place

Travis

Troiani

FAIRVIEW, TEXAS

For Building Houses, Not

Homes, I worked on the

whole piece at once and used

a wide range of materials and

tools. I added a few three-

dimensional elements as well.

The bottom right has a small

block of wood, from which I

suspended a small drawing,

using screws and thread.

I had taken a semester off

between transferring schools,

and I’d become isolated from

my friends and family—so

much so that I no longer

felt at home in my own

house. That’s the inspira-

tion for this piece—trying to

make the most out of a bad

situation. MW
