I never paint from preliminary
drawings. As I paint, what-
ever happens happens, and if
I don’t like the result I paint
over it. Fury was an experi-
mental piece. I used acrylic,
spray paint, tar gel, oil paint
stick, gel paste and paper;
hence, it’s a bit of an amal-
gam. I enjoy how Fury came
together.
As I begin a piece, I let
my feelings and the look of
the colors guide me. When I
paint, words often pop into
my mind. My instincts lead
me to the fi nal product. MW

For Praying Man, I wanted to
tap into a place of despera-
tion: the feeling of helpless-
ness when everything seems
to be crashing down on you.
Religion has always been a
strong foundation in my life,
so I wanted to refl ect the
ugliness and vulnerability of
feeling desperate.
The process took about
three days to unfold. I was
able to see many emotions
within the work, and that
excited me. My favorite detail
is the light blue paint just in
the middle of the painting.
