WORKSHOPS 2016 & 2017

WASHINGTON
Gage Academy of Art
12/5-12/9/16, Dominique Medici, Figure Painting with
a Limited Palette. Monday-Friday, 9:30am - 4:30pm.
$650. All levels. The paintings we admire beautifully
and skillfully employ Proportion, Value, Color and Edge.
Practicing and ultimately mastering these four aspects
of painting gives you the ability to fully express yourself
technically. This course is designed to give you the
framework to achieve your highest technical abilities.
The painting process will be broken down in to clear and
consecutive steps. Daily demos will be given, as well as
individual instruction and critiques throughout the day.
Since simplicity is one of the goals, you will be using the
Zorn palette -- a limited palette of only 4 colors; Titanium
White, Yellow Ochre, Vermillion (or Cad Red Light) and
Ivory Black.
12/7-12/9/16, Alexey Steele, Drawing the Human Head
for Painters. Wednesday-Friday, 9:30am - 4:30pm.
$400. All levels. This workshop is on the critical
importance of drawing for painters in the Russian
Academic Tradition. Students will focus on the
relationships between Form, Tone and Color essential in
a successful execution of any painting and particularly
fi gurative works. Alexey Steele will describe to the class
the principles and methods that he uses in constructing
works, based on spectacular examples of his own father’s
drawings from the golden era of Russian Academy revival
of the 1950s, showing how drawing based on legacy
affects paintings.
12/10-12/11/16, Mardie Rees, Gestural Sculpting.
Saturday-Sunday, 9:30am - 4:30pm. $275. All levels.
Quickly learn to capture a variety of gestures of the
human fi gure at a small scale from life. Emphasis is on
observation, body structure and knowledge of proportion
to create a new fi gure each one or two class sessions. As
sessions progress, learn to observe from life and better
understand gestures three-dimensionally. Because you
are capturing a variety of sketch poses by breaking down
and re-building a new gesture each class, you become
accustomed to working with the fi gure as a whole, and be
better able to judge your own work with a critical eye.
1/2-1/6/17, Gary Faigin, Portrait Painting. Monday-Friday,
9:30am - 4:30pm. $660. Beginning/Intermediate.
Explore alla prima portrait painting — direct brushstrokes
of pre-mixed colors on canvas — as you complete two
oil paintings from distinct portrait models. Learn the
practical steps to achieving a convincing resemblance
of the model, from preparing your canvas and setting up

your palette to the fundamental stages of blocking-in
your portrait and developing the facial forms through a
clear understanding of light and shade.
