USED TRAILABLE BOATS
There are hundreds of small cruisers you
could crane out onto a flatbed trailer at the
end of the season and take home,
especially those with bilge keels. But to
realistically ‘trail’ a 22ft+ long boat you
really need one with a lifting keel or
pivoting centreboard to make it possible
to launch and recover to a trailer without
completely submersing it.
While the former would save some
money if you only have to crane it in/out
annually, if you want to travel reasonable
distances by road between cruising
destinations and launch her yourself, I
suggest you look for one that was
specifically designed to trail, rig, launch
and recover easily.

Bay Cruiser 26
The big daddy of Swallow’s Bay Cruiser
range, the 26 might be pretty big to trail, but
she has been designed with that in mind,
so it certainly isn’t out of the question.
Said to be possible to rig within a
half-hour by one person, she is water-
ballasted as well as having a drop-keel
with ballast bulb for maximum stiffness
under sail.
Below, she boasts four berths, standing
headroom, a separate heads, a clever
swivelling chart/saloon table combination
and an innovative slide-out galley that
tucks away under the cockpit seating
when not required.

On deck, her carbon mast is light and
easy to step having a hinged tabernacle.
The boom is mounted on the mast,
allowing all the relevant control lines to
remain permanently connected. Her
cockpit is spacious, but ideally
proportioned for one person or a crew of
four to sail. Her flat-top mainsail offers
plenty of power while keeping the centre
of effort low to reduce heeling. The water
ballast can be jettisoned downwind for
better performance, while her deep
ballasted keel and twin rudders keep her
well on course.

Sedna 26
For a 26ft cruising yacht the Sedna 26
offers a huge amount for her minimalist
price tag. Her high freeboard and near
vertical sides give her a massive interior
volume to play with, resulting in
accommodation that matches many
30-32ft yachts. With 1.83m/6ft headroom,
the open-plan layout features an extensive
inner moulding that offers six berths,
including a double aft under the cockpit, a
reasonable galley with hob, fridge and
pressurised water, and a separate heads
compartment.
Not unlike her smaller sister, the 24, she
is water-ballasted with a steel centreplate,
both of which keep her surprisingly
upright in a choppy sea. Fine lines, a
shallow bilge and near vertical ends
means she has a long waterline making
her fast off the wind. To windward her
deep centreplate helps her point as well
as a fixed-keel boat.
David Harding’s review in the February
2018 issue of PBO states: ‘The Sedna 26
combines extraordinary internal volume
with surprisingly good sailing
performance.’

Jaguar 21
The Jaguar 21 and 23 were designed by
John Mullins and built in Canvey Island,
Essex. They came with fin or lifting keels,
the latter making for easy trailing.
Accommodation is open plan with four
berths, a small galley and a space for a
portable loo. The keel box for the lifting
keel is a little intrusive but doesn’t restrict
access to the vee-berth forward. The
saloon table stows under the cockpit sole
when not needed.
On deck she has a large cockpit and
decent side decks for safe forward
access. Her fractional rig has a loose-
footed mainsail and is easy to handle by
one person. She’s also pretty quick on the
water thanks to her slippery hull design
and is fairly stiff thanks to her internal
ballast and hefty (250kg) cast iron keel.
A 4-6hp outboard fits into a centrally
positioned well ahead of the rudder.

Sedna 26
offers great
performance on
the water and
plenty of living
space below
