V

oice-activated
technology is here,
now. Smartphones,
of course, lead the
way: the iPhone
and most new
android devices respond instantly
to commands such as “text mum”,
“search for parking...” and “Get
directions to...”. Do you still type
your text messages? So do I – even
though I know the phone can do
it for me.
At this year’s Beaulieu
Boatjumble we organised eight
speakers – experts in their various
fi elds – to hold forth in the PBO
marquee. The fi rst on stage was
Paul Sumpner of Digital Yacht
who was there to demonstrate
his company’s voice-activated
position-reporting software. Using
Amazon’s artifi cial intelligence (AI)

device ‘Alexa’ it is now possible
to ask your NMEA instruments:
“What is the wind doing?” and
“What is my exact position?”
For marine applications, the
software is in its infancy – we’ve
briefl y covered the technicalities
on page 52 – but future versions
may be able to answer: Distance to
next waypoint? Nearest navigation
mark? When will the tide turn?
I imagine you will be able to get
the device to remind you when the
depth is less than 5m; when a reef
might be a good idea, or a lifeline
and a lifejacket.
Actually, it’s beginning
to sound like a bit of a pest:
“Warning! Depth 4.9m, 4.8m,
4.7m...” Who needs more
electronics? “Alexa! Give it a rest!”
Let’s just sail for a bit, shall we?
Rob Melotti

Alexa... give it a rest!
