The completed hull and deck are primed, fi lled and faired,
then given a further light sanding in preparation for the top
coat fi nish to be applied.

The hull looking smart in its paint fi nish. All that remains is
for fi ttings, rig and sails to be added before you’re ready
for a trial sail.

(^1)
The rudder
is laminated
from timber, faired
to shape and the
alloy rudder stock
bonded in place.
The assembly is
then dry fi tted in
the boat before
being given a
sheathing of
glass/epoxy. it is
primed and fi lled
as required before
being given a fi nal
fairing and paint
fi nish.
Class rules dictate the
ballast must be in cast
pieces, with a minimum of
eight and a maximum of 16
with no piece weighing
more than 35kg with a
density not greater than
that of lead. Each layer of
ballast is cast in two
pieces with a longitudinal
angled joint so the two
halves slide tightly
together into the hollow
keel. Every paired layer of
lead is identical apart from
the bottom pair which are
shaped to fi t the curved
sides of the bottom of the
keel. It’s essential the lead
is a good fi t in the hollow
keel to ensure there is as
much weight as possible
low down which will result
in a better righting
moment.
BUILD TIME
The estimated time to build
a boat from scratch is
around 250 hours,
and this includes
cutting and setting
up the mould
frames. Build a
second boat and it
would take much
less time!
COST
It’s diffi cult to put a
price on fi nal build
cost as this will be
very much dependent on
the type and quality of
materials used in the build,
and whether second-hand
spars, sails and fi ttings
can be utilised

design, along with pictures
