BLURRING BOUNDARIES BETWEEN THE
MAC AND iPA D
Before you can get started with Sidecar, you
need to make sure your Catalina-running Mac
is compatible with Sidecar and your iPadOS-
running iPad supports the Apple Pencil, as
is necessary if your tablet is to work with
Sidecar. Sidecar is largely limited to newer
Macs – including 27-inch iMacs from late 2015
onwards, MacBooks from early 2016 onwards,
MacBook Pros from mid-2016 and later and
Mac Minis and MacBook Airs from late 2018
and later. The 2017 iMac Pro and forthcoming
2019 Mac Pro are also supported.
Once you’ve established that you have a
compatible pair of Mac and iPad, select the
Airplay icon on your Mac’s menu bar before
selecting your iPad in the resulting menu. If
you’re unsure what exactly to look out for here,
MacRumors has a useful video guide. You will
know that you are connected when the Airplay
icon goes blue and in the menu below, you
can choose whether or not to show a Sidebar
or Touch Bar on your iPad and toggle between
“mirror” and “separate” displays.
In your Mac’s System Preferences, you can also
choose exactly where to display the Sidecar and
Touch Bar, which give you a wealth of features
and functionality literally at your fingertips.
Nonetheless, you might want to omit these
panels altogether if you would prefer more
