Tibetan influences are strong here, as you can see from the traditional dress worn by this Amdi woman,
despite it having been more than six decades since Ladakh was ceded to India. The region has clung onto
its Tibetan-Buddhist roots, with the principal language spoken remaining Tibetan Ladakhi. Women here
enjoy a status that is not common in rural India: they are decision-makers, running businesses full-time
as well as their homes.
