› › HOW TO

Step Four: Select the Quick Selection tool (W)
from the Toolbox and, in the Brush Picker (in
the Options Bar), set the brush Size to around
40 pixels and the Hardness to 75%. Then, begin
painting over the subject to start selecting her,
and continue until the entire subject is selected.
Remember, if you select too much, press-and-
hold the Option (PC: Alt) key and paint back over
the unwanted areas, and don’t forget to sub-
tract the selection from the space between her
arms and body. It isn’t necessary to be insanely
precise with the selection, as we’ll ultimately be
blending it with texture and brush effects so
some areas won’t be visible anyway.

Step Five: Once the selection is made, go to
the Options Bar and click on Select and Mask to
refine the selection. Press O to set the View to
Onion Skin in the Properties panel, then lower
the Transparency slider to 90%. Choose the
Refine Edge Brush tool (R) from the toolbar on
the left side, then set this brush Size to around
40 pixels like the Quick Selection brush, but drop
the Hardness to around 50%.
Paint around the subject, specifically around
the soft edges like the bottom areas of the dress
and the hair (you’ll want to decrease the brush
size slightly around the hair; use the Left Bracket
key on your keyboard to quickly change the size
of the brush). You’ll see some fringe elements
appear as a result of this, so just press-and-hold
the Option (PC: Alt) key and paint back over
the unwanted areas. Some areas may remain
around the edges, but don’t get too concerned
with it as it will ultimately blend in with the back-
ground anyway.
