hat an honour it was to be in
St Barth in March, not only to
see the annual spectacle of
the Bucket, but also to witness the spirit
the locals have shown in rebuilding the
island so quickly after the hurricanes.
The haste to do so was in part
driven by the imminent arrival of a fleet
of superyachts, but the impact these
boats have on such a beautiful island is
not always benign.
Aboard one yacht I raced on, all the
crew were issued with reusable bottles
filled with water made by the yacht’s
watermaker. On a different day aboard
another boat, the 750ml water bottles
were all from single-use plastic.
Unfortunately the latter situation
is all too common. A survey by
waterwithoutwaste.org found that 82
per cent of superyacht owners and
guests, and 58 per cent of crews,
still drink water from plastic bottles.
We’re talking thousands – even tens of
thousands – of bottles being discarded
per superyacht per year.
All superyachts have watermakers
so with the availability of good filtered
water systems and taps that provide
instant hot, chilled or sparkling water,
how can there be any logic in shipping

  • and having to dispose of – thousands
    of single-use plastic bottles?
    Superyachts have always led
yachting in terms of technology. They
should be setting an example with
sustainability too – and helping to keep
    these beautiful islands beautiful.
