SUPERSAIL WORLD 14 JULY-SEPTEMBER 2018

The aluminium hull of the largest yacht ever to be built at
Royal Huisman was turned at the end of March. The biggest
hall at the Vollenhove yard was extended to accommodate the
modern Dykstra-designed 81m (266ft) plumb bow schooner.
Four cranes turned the hull while it hung mid-air over the
canal adjacent to the shipyard. Upon her delivery in 2020, this
will be the world’s largest aluminium sailing yacht.

At a time when most yards are being
cautious with new model releases and
investment, Nautor’s Swan seems to be
going the opposite way. A new model
line-up of a 65, 78, and ClubSwan 125
are all in build and there are rumours
of two further new models, as well as
news of this new 98.
What is driving this bold new
investment in large models?
Marketing director Vanni Galgani
explains that Nautor is split into three
product lines: Swan Yachts (up to
80ft), ClubSwan Yachts (racing/one
design) and MaxiSwan Yachts (above
80ft) and how the new models fit into
the three different lines the company
is developing simultaneously – three
companies in one as it were.
He also tells us that the market is
responding well to these latest models
and that the company has an owner
who pushes when it seems right
to do so. “In a world of banks and
investors, to have an old-style owner
gives some advantage.”
Swan says its latest superyacht, this
attractive 98ft (30m) model by long-
favoured designer German Frers, will
“redefine high-performance cruising
by delivering unrivalled comfort,
safety and reliability while ocean
passagemaking at speed”.
It’s a fast ocean cruiser then, but

an optional telescopic keel and twin
rudders that can reduce draught to just
3.2m opens up shoal cruising grounds
for a yacht of this size.
As with all large Swans of recent
years, hull and deck will be built in
Sprint pre-preg carbon on Corecell
foam. The interior is by Genovese
architect Misa Poggi with three
different style themes available using
Italian leathers and textiles. Layout
options include an owner’s cabin
forward or aft.
The Swan 98 is only marginally
longer than the 95 that launched in

  1. Following the Swan 78, we are
seeing the start of a refresh of the Swan
model line-up. The first two Swan 78s
were due to launch as we went to press.
We will be visiting the Finnish yard
this summer and intend to report on
the progress of the ClubSwan 125 in the
    next issue of Supersail World.
