Yachting World - July 2018

(nextflipdebug2) #1
Congratulations to Ryan and Sarah
Wiblin, who were recently married on Sir
Peter Blake’s Steinlager 2.
The new Mrs Wiblin explained: “Ryan
and I met sailing, had our first date on
Steinlager 2 and as passionate sailors
we wanted to get married on the water
while under sail! The amazing team at NZ
Sailing Trust made that all possible.”
The famous yacht, which was
skippered by Peter Blake to dominate
the 1989-90 Whitbread Round
the World Race, is now
run by the New Zealand
Sailing Trust to continue
Blake’s legacy and give
young New Zealanders
an opportunity to
experience sailing.

Saying ‘I do’ on Steinlager

Rivers of seaweed
This drone shot of VO65 Akzo
Nobel on the Volvo Ocean Race
leg to Newport, Rhode Island,
shows the yacht sailing through
channels of sargasso weed. The
yellow-brown weed, prone to
entangle round keels, rudders

and hydrogenerators, has been
widespread in the Caribbean
and tropical North Atlantic in the
last few years.
According to the newspaper
Caribbean Compass: ‘The actual
sargassum route and cycle are
not well known, but volume

does seem to be increasing
each season. Recent research
suggests that Atlantic algae
responds positively to increased
C0 2 and acidity in seawater.’
Sailors are being asked to add
to satellite observation data to
track the concentration of weed.
