EDITORIAL

How things change. Two years ago, bar the occasional high-end
RIB or superyacht tender, you could have counted the number
of British yards building genuine performance boats on the
fi ngers of one foot. Today, there are at least half a dozen new
examples in build or in development, including craft from
all three of the UK’s biggest production yards.
What’s so exciting about the new generation of British
sportsboats is that they all offer something completely
different. The Fairline F-Type 33 marries cutting-edge
looks with a wide range of engines covering everything
from a pair of economical twin diesels to fi re-breathing
V8 petrols on sports exhausts. The Princess R35 takes things
to another level with an all-carbon-fi bre hull and active foiling
technology that resets the bar for ride comfort while rearranging
your internal organs with its cornering speeds. Then there’s Ice
Marine’s Bladerunner 45 with its brilliant stabilised monohull
design and triple D6 engines that add serious cruising range
and refi nement to the mix. And let’s not forget the exquisite
style, fi nish and brand appeal of the Aston Martin AM37,
nor the rakish design of Hunton’s hotly anticipated new 55.
That just leaves one notable exception – Sunseeker. We know
it has given the green light to a new generation of performance
craft designed in conjunction with Red Bull Technology but
other than that, the project remains shrouded in mystery. One
thing’s for certain though – with rivals as good as these, they’ll
need to come up with something pretty damned exceptional
to get a look in. We can hardly wait!
