new facility in Carrara for future Wally
projects, such as the Wally 145 – scheduled
for launch in 2019. This new shipyard is
dedicated to superyachts, while all the
racing projects will remain in Bergamo.
As forTango, her owner’s verdict is that
she’s “sleek, quick, beautiful looking – and
comfortable to cruise.” After extensive sea
trials, she was ready just a few days before
her debut in Monaco. She was in the
principality for only a couple of days, and
she left quickly for extra training with the
crew in preparation for her first oicial
regatta, Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez, where
she joined up with 14 other Wallys,
including the three other Wallycentos,
Open Season, Magic Carpet^3 andGalateia.

days spent training and tuning the yacht
were well used, since she won her first
race in Saint-Tropez.Tangois a thing of
beauty – but she’s also fast enough that

The first Wallycento was built by Green
Marine for Sir Charles Dunstone, with
naval architecture by Judel/Vrolijk and
interiors by Design Unlimited. Weight
distribution problems were solved when
the yacht was bought by her current
owner, who lengthened and lightened
the hull and increased the upwind sail
area and draft at STP Mallorca, making
her one of the fastest cruiser-racers
afloat. The owner says the Wallycento’s
best feature is the sail area to overall
weight ratio. “Open Seasonbenefited
significantly from lengthening the hull
as well,” he says, “a move that improved
aesthetics even further.”
Lightning fast, this is Sir Lindsay
Owen-Jones’s third Wally. He briefed
the designers to produce the fastest
cruiser-racer in the world, with no
limitations. Reichel/Pugh was selected
as naval architect, for its experience in
designing performance maxi-racers.
The result is a yacht that is explosively
fast on all points of sail and in all wind
conditions. “Reichel/Pugh built
Galateialater, which is our one with
some improvements,” says Sir Lindsay.
“But we’re improving as we go. Last
year they beat us for the championship
so this year we’ve done some tricky
things to get back at them.”
“We wanted a yacht as an answer to a
busy life: a simple place without
distractions, minimal furnishings, zen
temple to the sea and wind,” says
Galateia’s owner. They got their wish.
Another Reichel/Pugh boat, with Alexia
Leuschen interiors and built at Green
Marine, she’s a big leap forward. Hull
design, sailplan, appendages and
structural engineering were all
reassessed. The owner describes the
result as “very responsive steering;
sports-car-like acceleration,” but she’s
just as impressive standing still: “wide
transom, plumb bow and low freeboard
give an incredible ramp presence.”
