According to Tacoli, VYR is very much a ‘one of
a kind’ show. “Its format responds to all foreseeable
needs, from business to brand representation, from
design to lifestyle, from services to accessories. In
general, the demand from the industry was to present
not just the end product, but to focus also on how
this is done. For this reason, during the exhibition
all shipyards and related companies were open for
regular business hours, turning VYR into a ‘show
within a show’.”
The integration of high-end production with the
supply chain in Viareggio gave visitors a chance to see
the inner workings of the market and to interact with
all major players in the Italian nautical sector. “The
importance is also of a geographical nature,” Tacoli
says. “Viareggio is globally renowned for the excellent
craftsmanship of the people who work here. The boat
show is our way of thanking these professional figures
by shining the spotlight on their mastery.”
Plans are now underway to make next year’s
Versilia Yachting Rendez-Vous even bigger, bolder and
more international than ever. ICE, the Italian trade
agency, invested heavily in the internationalisation
of VYR 2018 by inviting attendees from around the
world to promote the event and its visibility abroad.
According to Tacoli, this commitment will grow and
develop further in the next few years, helping to raise
the profile that a show like this deserves.
One of the highlights of VYR 2018 was the return
of Benetti’s International Design Conference, where
a panel of industry experts discussed new design
trends and their inf luence on today’s naval and
urban architecture inside the historic halls of the
Benetti Shipyard. “One thing we are able to confirm
is the third edition of the Design Conference, which
in the past two editions has brought all the major
international designers to Viareggio for what has
become the global symposium of naval architecture
and design,” says Tacoli. “It’s one event I’m particularly
proud of.”

OPTIMISTIC FUTURE
Nautica Italiana’s latest industry figures highlight a
consistent level of optimism for future growth – a view
that is shared amongst almost all of the exhibitors
that IBI spoke to at the show. According to Tacoli, the
value of new-boat production in Italy reached €2.3bn
in 2017 (up 14% compared to the previous year), with
inboard-powered boats accounting for 86% of the total.
Sailboats accounted for just 9%, followed by outboards
and inflatables at 5%. However, while sales of inboards
grew by 13.2% last year, sailboats climbed by 23.5% –
accounting for a growing share of the market.
“Export is key for Italian nautical companies with
86% of the production value destined abroad, while
the internal market shows a significant increase
compared to 2016 of 35%,” says Tacoli. “With these
figures, it’s easy to be somewhat optimistic about
the future.”
