SECTOR SPOTLIGHT | SUPERYACHTS - WORLD REVIEW

Espen Oeino commented that SOLAS,
LYC3 and the PYC make designing and
construction more challenging, while the
MLC makes crewing a serious operation
with proper administration with the owner
having a lot of responsibility. He points to
ISPS reducing the privacy of anyone on-
board and that within Port State Control
there is a stronger enforcement regime in
place. The danger with the latter, especially
for charter yachts, is that if the PSC
documents are not in order the yacht could
be delayed leaving on the charter.

BUILDING THE DREAM
After questioning whether all the rules
and regulations still make owning a yacht
fun, Espen Oeino commented: “We, as an
industry, need to be more proactive and
contribute to shaping the regulations so
as to discourage owners abandoning their
dreams.” He associated this message with
the aim of Cluster Yachting Monaco being
a group of yachting professionals working
together to make Monaco the centre
of excellence for the global superyacht
market.
As the superyacht fleet ventures further
afield – and especially as more and more
yachts visit Asia-Pacific as the world’s
third cruising region after the Med and
Caribbean – the leading brokerage houses
have generally expanded their networks
to cover this huge area. Most of the
leading international brokerage and yacht
service houses such as Frasers, Burgess
and Northrop & Johnson can be said to
be operating globally through their oice
networks which generally provide new-
build, pre-owned brokerage, charter and
yacht management services.
Last but not least, marinas are having
to come to terms with yachts of around
80m (263ft)-plus and provide berths
accordingly. In the Med there are a
growing number of larger berths in Italy,
Spain, France and Montenegro. In the
US there are relatively few berths for very
large yachts, while the Caribbean has
some available in areas like Puerto Rico.
In Asia-Pacific, Thailand has marinas
that can accommodate yachts of around
100m or more – as does Singapore and
New Zealand. Australia is very conscious
that it has a shortage of berths for very
large yachts and this needs to be addressed
with new infrastructure investment. A new
development in Japan will provide capacity
for larger visiting superyachts.

OVERVIEW OF THE VARIOUS SY BUILD

MARKETS AND CRUISING DESTINATIONS

LIKE THE US the European superyacht is
market is well-publicised so here is a brief
summary for this report:

ATLANTIC ISLANDS
The Azores and Madeira are both cruising
locations for visiting superyachts with the
former also being a departure and arrival
point for yachts crossing the Atlantic.

CROATIA
With its stunning coastline it is not
surprising that Croatia is one of the
world’s leading superyacht charter and
cruising places. Supporting these are an
excellent stock of some 50 marinas along
the coast plus a number of shipyards
that can deal with new builds, refits and
repairs as required.

CYPRUS
With the new Limassol marina offering
superyacht berths up to 110m and other
marina projects underway or planned
with superyacht berths, Cyprus can
now look forward to receiving more
superyachts. It also has a leasing scheme
which has attracted a number of
superyacht owners.

FINLAND
Two leading sailing yacht brands build
superyacht sized vessels. Baltic has
built sailing superyachts up to 175ft and
is building a run of others over 100ft.
Currently it has 85, 112 and 142ft projects
on the go. Baltic Yachts has also made
a bid to buy the Italian Cantieri di Pisa
brand so if concluded it will be entering
the motor superyacht market soon.
Nautor Swan presented the Swan 115 at
Monaco in 2015 and it is currently working
on a Swan 140 project.

FRANCE
The Cote d’Azur, France and superyachts
are a core part of the international
superyacht market and the country offers
a complete spread taking in builders,
refit facilities, marinas and shows. It
is a popular cruising nation with key
destinations such as Cannes, Antibes,
St Tropez, Toulon, Nice and Corsica to
name a few.
The country is also home to many
designers and brokers and refit yards like
La Ciotat, Compositeworks and Monaco
Marine. New build yards include Ocea,
Couach and CNB Yachts.
