MONTENEGRO

Don’t let Montenegro’s small size deceive – it
is bursting with amenities and activities, sights
and sounds, flavours and textures to delight a
visitor both on land and on the water. When on
the water you can go sailing, diving or snorkelling
between and around the many small islands that
dot the coastline. Once on land lose yourself in the
winding streets of the country’s villages, stopping
to sample traditional dishes such as cured meats,
fresh breads and priganice (fritters). Slip away from
the villages and you will find yourself in craggy,
verdant mountains, where you will come across
ancient fortresses, historic monuments, and
walled, medieval towns.

The Bay of Kotor
In a fascinating quirk of geography, the Bay of
Kotor boasts the only fjord to be found in the
Mediterranean. The city of Kotor is well worth the
stop. Buried deep within the bay, the city offers
a collection of beautiful churches, hospitable
restaurants and comfortable hotels. The coast
is home to first-class diving, fishing and bathing
spots, while the nearby countryside is rich in
mountaineering, hiking and other outdoor activities.
At the mouth of the Bay of Kotor sits Luštica
Bay, a new town with modern, state-of-the-
art infrastructure, two marinas and many other
luxury amenities.
Perast is located just a few kilometres from Kotor.
This tiny town boasts 16 churches and 17 formerly
grand palazzos. Perast’s most famous landmarks
are actually right in the middle of the water- two
picturesque islands: Our Lady of the Rocks (Gospa
od Škrpjela) and Island of Saint George.
Our Lady of the Rocks rests on a man-made
island, and has a chapel dedicated to the Madonna
and Child. Its origin is one of the most fascinating
stories of the sea.
The Island of Saint George is other islet off the
coast, although it is a natural island. The island
contains two notable locations: the Saint George
Benedictine monastery, dating from the 12th
century, and the old graveyard for the old nobility
from Perast.

Budva
Budva is a mix of the old and the new. Its 15th
century citadel is reached through cobblestone
streets that offer a variety of art galleries, festivals,
churches, cafés, restaurants and boutiques. The
island also boasts beaches with many modern
amenities to while away the summer months.

Sveti Stefan
Along the coast from Budva is the smart resort
isle of Sveti, which is actually connected to the
mainland by a narrow bridge. A small, red-roofed
town, Sveti Stefan is crammed full of high quality
restaurants, deluxe boutique hotels and bars.
Queen’s Beach is close to Sveti Stefan. Accessible
only by boat it is ringed by cliffs and mountains, and
was a favourite recreation area of the Montenegrin
Queen Milena.
