t fi rst glance it might seem as if the possibiliti es are limited, even restricted, that
NOIRS and colour are locked into a dualisti c interrelati onship but as Nicolas and
Romain have shown this is not the case at all.
Black is their starti ng point, the origin, but it is simplisti c to say that black is where
their story begins. Look at their images and you will see that it begins with dancers and
minerals. With cellars and roads and mountains and water. It conti nues with stars, coal,
fabrics, and even bolts. But these are starti ng points only, is what you see real?
Look further and you will be transported in an imaginary world where dreams and fantasy
are without boundaries.
NOIRS honours lights and colours. Absolute black absorbs all the wavelengths, it is then
characterised by an absence of colour but, as their images show, black is very rarely pure
therefore it is intrinsically linked to light and colours – all colours.
Nicolas and Romain have revealed that black shows itself in the micro-details of these materials
and surfaces and in the interplay of colour and shape as enhanced and refl ected by NOIRS. Their
achievement has been to make us, the onlooker, appreciate the isolated or the dominant colours
in their vision, because it uses the surfaces of the material to enhance and lift the NOIRS light so
that we may observe and to discover the light and the colours, and therefore the NOIRS matt er.The most recent exhibiti on of photographs
and video by Nicolas Claris and Romain Claris
explores the nuances and adaptati ons of NOIRS.
