› › DOWN & DIRTY TRICKS

Step 12: At the bottom of the Filter Gallery,
click the New Effect Layer icon to add a new fil-
ter stacked above the Photocopy filter. Select the
Torn Edges filter and set the Image Balance to
32, Smoothness to 15, and Contrast to 12. Then
click OK to apply the filters. Change the layer’s
blend mode to Multiply near the top left of the
Layers panel to allow the background layer to
show through the drawing effect.

Step 13: Reveal the Photo Group, and with the
group as the active layer, click the Add Layer
Mask icon (circle in a square) at the foot of the
Layers panel. Select the Brush tool (B) and open
the Brush Presets panel (found in the Window
menu). If you’re using a pressure-sensitive pen
and tablet, select the Round Angle Low Stiffness
brush tip; if you’re using a mouse, you can try
one of the Spatter brushes and lower the Opac-
ity in the Options Bar to build up the effect. Press
X until the Foreground color is black, then gently
paint on the mask to remove the photo elements
around the model’s upraised hand, lower torso
area, and the back of his head and neck. Use the
Bracket keys on your keyboard to quickly change
the size of the brush as needed.
