The fun factor

W

hat does the future hold for
sailing? It’s a big question, and
one we have been asking this
month. Our special report
(p34) was prompted aft er new
research confi rmed a decline in participation. As an
avid sailor it’s truly disheartening to think that there
are fewer people coming into and experiencing our
wonderfully diverse sport. But there are things we
can each do about it, on several diff erent levels.
Having spoken to top sailors and leading
industry authorities extensively on the subject,
and to grassroots sailors themselves, the common
denominator in every response I’ve noted is
the word ‘fun’. Sailing has to be enjoyable for
people to want to do it – aft er all, it is a leisure
activity. Th is is true for adults as well as children,
and holds equally for those already engaged
in the sport as it does for those fi rst timers.
Boosting participation and future proofi ng our
sport relies on sailing being made fun. Th is may well
involve sailing taking a long hard look at itself and
applying some lateral thinking. As Bob Fisher rightly
points out, change doesn’t always happen quickly
but it is necessary, particularly in an age where
people’s attention is pulled in so many diff erent
directions. Society is undergoing some major

cultural shift s right now and sailing – particularly
racing – needs to adapt to that change in lifestyle.
Th at may mean that the boats, the courses, the
events, the club set-ups look completely diff erent
in 10 or 20 years’ time. Not just because we’re all
busy whizzing around on foils (some of us may well
be doing so, but it won’t be universal) but because
we change the fundamental way racing operates.
Th e important point is that you can be a part
of the solution. Yes, organising bodies play a role,
but initiating change on a local level just takes
a little imagination and willpower to maximise
our sport’s appeal and ensure it delivers on that
fundamental concept: fun. Th at may take you out of
your personal comfort zone, but the upshot? More
people to race against
and a sport that thrives
beyond this generation.
