4.A simple red

system controls
ride height, via
the wand on the
trailing edge of
the main foil

with a neutral position for everything
you need to get foiling and a relative
+/- from baseline for everything too,
which should enable easy understanding
of the effect of different adjustments.
The control simplicity spreads
throughout the boat and some simple but
effective ideas are evidenced throughout.
Adjustment for the main foil (controlling
how high you foil) is a simple piece
of string with a green bobble and red
bobble. If you want to go lower, you
pullthegreen(safe)bobble.Ifyou’re
feeling confident to go higher and faster,
you pull the red (danger) bobble.

The F101 carries a reasonable amount of
sail with a 9m^2 main, a mere 1m^2 bigger
than a Moth main, but with the addition
of a 5.5m^2 headsail. This was originally
a bigger downwind gennaker/screecher
but as development continued in the
prototype stages the cut has become
flatter and sail area reduced such that
it’s now much closer to a large – if fairly
full–jib.Thisheadsailisfurledaway
(on a furler specifically designed by
Harken) upwind once the breeze is in
double digits, and can be held downwind

in all conditions – bravery dependent!
The two-piece carbon mast has
a set of lowers, which are the key
macro adjustment ashore for power,
and a set of main shrouds. The main
shrouds and a ‘boat breaker’ purchase
to attach the forestay induce pre-bend
in the mast in exactly the same way
a 49er or 29er are set up. Again, once
locked in, this is all left for the day.
Like the Waszp, the F101 has gone
forfoilsthatcanberaisedintheboat,
so avoiding the capsized walk into
the water that is a feature of Moth
launching. However, unlike the Waszp
