RS200 rules rethink
The RS200 class
committee has
announced some
changes to the class
rules in the hope of
stamping out reported
instances of foul play,
which anecdotally may
be on the rise in one of
the UK’s most popular
doublehanded classes.
The committee says
that sadly there have
been reports from a
number of events last
season, where the
behaviour of some
sailors fell rather short
of that which is
expected in a largely
self-policing sport.
Following discussion
at the class AGM during
the national
championships the
RS200 fl eet will be
reinstating penalties for
hitting a mark (dropped
from the class rules
some years ago) with
the aim of reducing
barging at marks.
In addition to this
step, the rather bigger
choice of having an on
the water adjudicator at
all major events has
been approved. Finally,
there will be an
arbitration process
introduced as a quick
alternative to a protest.
NewclassforCowes
Lendy Cowes Week has announced that the 2018
regatta will, for the first time, see the introduction of
a new doublehanded class.
Shorthanded racing has recently become
incredibly successful worldwide, both inshore and
offshore and the new class reflects the demand for
shorthanded sailing. Entries in this class will be for
boats with IRC ratings between 0.900 to 1.085.
Racing will be held as part of the Black Group
and courses will be about three hours long with a
range of wind angles, but fewer legs than standard
IRC classes. The class will have its own start. MARY PUDNEY; PAUL WYETH; MARK LLOYD/LLOYD IMAGES; KURT ARIGO/ROLEX
Ten teams are confi rmed for the 2018 Fast40+
season which will get underway in April.
Since the class was fi rst dreamt up three
seasons ago it has been going from strength to
strength. 2018 will see a number of returning
faces, with three of the four boats vying for the
title returning in Girls on Film, Rebellion and
Hitchhiker all back for the new season. Overall
winners of last year’s championship, Sir Keith
Mills’ Invictus will take a year out as they look to
commission a new boat for 2019.
New faces this year will include Niklas and
Catherine Zennström’s Swedish-fl agged Rán
Racing as they step away from the TP52 to
make their fi rst foray into the world of the
Fast40+ fl eet.
