CLUBS & CLASSES

NEWS

Ullswater YC has launched its
60th anniversary year with a
new look to its sailing
programme. In addition to
traditional highlights such as
the Lord Birkett Memorial
Trophy in July, there will be
four new major weekend
open events.
The Daffodil Regatta, 14-15
April, is open to all classes and

coincides with Ullswater’s
spring celebrations featuring
Wordsworth’s famous poem.
A conventional singlehander
weekend is set for 26-27 May,
with a cruiser and keelboat
weekend on 25-26 August
and an asymmetric weekend
on 20-21 October.
Club racing representative,
Jon Abbatt explained: “The

aim is to concentrate all our
efforts and resources on four
big events which will be an
attraction for visitors in a wide
range of classes.”
Any classes wanting to add
one of the open weekends to
their class calendar are invited
to get in touch; simply
email Jon via racing@

Bursaries boost for London
Aspiring sailors from across London and the
southeast have had a boost to their sailing
ambitions thanks to performance and
coaching bursaries from the South East Youth
Training Fund, a charity associated with the
RYA. The bursaries offer modest financial
support to promising young sailors, who in
turn pass on their enthusiasm to others.
Among the recipients was Topper National
Junior Squad sailor Aaron Evans (pictured
below) who was awarded a £200 bursary.
Aaron is a member of Silver Wing SC, where
he assists with training; he is now looking to
complete an RYA Assistant Instructor course.
Club commodore Stuart Hall said: “Aaron
has shown commitment to his sailing and
is proving a great ambassador for the juniors
in our club and in the wider region.”
Five coaching bursaries were also awarded.
