Hayling offer to new club members
Hayling Island SC is holding an open day on
Monday 28 May, with a waiver on joining fees
for anyone taking out membership before 4
June, which amounts to a saving of £350.
The south coast club has a busy shoreside and on the
water programme for all ages, and membership committee
chairDavidNichollshopestowelcomemanynewpeople.
“The club has exceptional facilities and opportunities
for families, individuals and young people in terms of
life skills, peer groups, support and friendship,” he said.

First international sports centre for ASF
The Andrew Simpson Foundation is opening its first international sailing
and watersports centre. The not-for-profit Andrew Simpson Watersports
Centre – Lake Garda, at Campione del Garda c/o Univela Sailing, will become
a European hub from 1 April, offering a full residential package as well as
RYA sailing, windsurfing and powerboating courses; also foiling, high level
sailing clinics, RYA Instructor training, regatta support and boat charter.
In line with the aims of the charity, the move is designed to increase sailing
participation and improve the lives of young people through sailing.
Andrew Simpson Watersports Centres provide the foundation
with a sustainable method of delivering long-term charitable benefits
that are not totally dependent on grants and public donations.

Youth sailors looking for their next boat after
outgrowing their Radial, 420 or 29er, are being
urged to consider giving RS800 sailing a go.
National champions Luke and Emma
McEwen believe the RS800 offers a
perfect combination of competitive one
design racing and great socials.
RS800 Co-Chair Luke said: “A tiny
minority will take the Olympic pathway
into 49ers or 470s but the rest of us are

looking for a bit of fun at the weekends, a
new challenge and a good social scene.”
The RS800 weight and righting moment
equalisation system allows smaller sailors to
compete on equal terms, and class rules allow
helm and crew to swap whenever they like, so
several teams like to take turns on the helm.
Second-hand boats are available for under
£2,000 ready to race. Demo boat available;

Doug Latta has been
appointed vice president of
the National Solo
Class Association.
NSCA president Will Loy,
who will be stepping down
from his position in July,
said it was perfect timing
and that Doug would be a
great asset with his “on-
water talent and off-water
friendly demeanour”.
Latta said Loy would
be a hard act to follow.
He was introduced to

Solo sailing at his home
club, Portchester SC, and
bought Solo 5300, which
was originally former class
president Roger Gravatt’s
boat. He entered his first
Solo open on the day he
took it back to the club,
on 15 June 2014, little
thinking that just over
three years later he would
be class vice-president.
“It’s been an
amazing trip from that
first outing,” he said.
