Bolland claims
RS300 Inland title
The RS300 Inland Championship was
held at Stewartby after being
postponedfromautumndueto
StormBrian,butwasalmostaswindy
and much colder. Capsizes saw plenty
of place changing. Steve Bolland
(Bristol Corinthian) took the first win
despite a late dip of his own, the next
two bullets going to Paul Watson
(Bowmore) and local Pete Ellis. Back
in the clubhouse it became clear that
Harry McVicar (Draycote) was the
overnight leader, with a decent 2,2,2
series by dint of sailing fast and not
falling in.
If day one was full on then day
two was weapons-grade windy. The
mother of all gusts hit the fleet on
the opening run, with only Bolland
staying upright and taking the win.
Bolland,provingthereislifeinthe
old dog yet, went on to win the next
two races as well and the inland title,
with Watson second and Ellis third.

Squally winds reaching 30 knots
from the northeast made for
record-breaking conditions in the

Barbados Race.
While the lively conditions in
bigseasprovedtoomuchfor
many of the 34 entries in the
60nm sprint around the island of
Barbados, seven records were
broken – the largest ever number
in the history of the event.
Local adrenaline junkie Trevor
Hunte on his windsurfer smashed
hisownrecordwithatimeof5h

multi-winged supermaxi from

Australia skippered by Ludde
Ingvall, broke the Absolute
Monohull record and established
the 100ft and under record
(04:13:37).
Young sailors included
27-year-old Jason Tindale’s team
from Barbados YC in College
Funds, who having established
the J/24 record in 2015 and
bettered their time in 2016, did it
again (08:18:09).
The 50ft and under record

of mainly locals, some of who
had never sailed before.
AndreasBergfromGermany
broke his Singlehanded record
from last year in his Dufour 44
Luna (07:57:19), and Conviction,
the local Botin Carkeek-designed
TP52 with David Staples at the
helm, set a new 60ft and under
record (05:17:29). The fast local
team aboard J/105 Whistler,
helmed by Peter Lewis, took the
CSA Record (06:11:40).

Inaugural Portishead
Channel Chop Pursuit
The Channel Chop was held for the
very first time this year with 24
dinghies tackling a two-hour pursuit
race at Portishead in a blustery SSW
wind. Although the wind direction
meant there was a lack of any true
Channel chop, some exciting offshore
legs, gusting 25 knots, meant the
trapeze boats came through to
dominate. At the end, local team
Chris and Jon Gill in their Fireball

fellow locals Anthony and James

Staunton Blaster
The Staunton Blaster proved a test of
endurance for the 30-strong fleet, with up
to 40 knots on the first day and 28 knots on
the second. The five-race series saw locals
taking the podium, the overall win going to
CoreyNewton(Supernova)aheadofMatt
Foskett/Simon Foskett (Fireball) and Pete
Gray/Rachael Rhodes (Scorpion) third.
This was the first half a Midlands mini-
series, with the second half at Notts County.

IN ASSOCIATION WITH

Bough Beech Icicle half time
At the halfway point in the Bough Beech Icicle series, eight
races had been completed with 86 entries across the two
handicap classes.
A breezy opening day was followed by two days of calm
and a warm moderate breeze.
In the 70-entry conventional class, local Wayfarer team
GuyMarksandSamPygallwerelookinghardtobeatwith
five first places, while in the asymmetric class the
competition is much closer, with RS400 sailors Mick and
Sarah Whitmore (Royal Sovereign) leading – but only five
points separating the first four boats.
