(Jacob Rumans) #1
NEW yachts
With rupert holmes

The boat on show was very much
a prototype and had been built from
scratch in an impressively quick three
months. It had clearly been rushed to get
it to the show (by no means alone in that
respect) and had a few rough edges that
will no doubt be sorted before production
starts in earnest, when Bavaria’s usual
consistent quality can be expected.
The Spinlock ZS jammers, fitted in
place of conventional clutches, serve as a
reminder this design is more than simply
a smaller model that has been scaled up.
Sail controls are led aft to just a pair of
winches next to each steering position.
On a smaller boat we’d be tempted to
criticise the position of the winches

on the coaming, rather than pedestal
mounted inboard where they are easier
to work, but with electric operation that’s
a smaller concern. However, there needs
to be more provision for stowage of rope
tails than on the prototype boat.
Elsewhere, the extra deck space
compared to the smaller boats has been
well used, including more extensive
coachroof sunbeds, while the forward
part of the cockpit allows guests to relax
well clear of the sailing action.
As would be expected, there’s a huge
amount of space below decks, and a wide
variety of layouts are possible. Options
include a dedicated office, a huge owners
stateroom with luxury bathroom and

walk-in closet/wardrobe. Guest cabins
are also well appointed. As standard the
galley is at the forward end of the large
saloon, where it makes excellent use of
the available space. However, there’s a
drawback in a practical sense if you’re
serving food or drinks to crew on deck
while under way or dining al fresco.
A big plus is the price – at little more
than r1 million including VAT this boat will
bring ownership of a new large yacht to a
wider audience than ever before.

Bavaria C45 and C50
The two new smaller Bavaria yachts are available
in Holiday, Style and Ambition options.
As with existing Bavaria models, the former is
predominately aimed at the charter market, with
a simple, but robust set up, while the Style line

is aimed at the bulk of private owners wanting a
more luxurious fit out and inventory.
The Ambition version suits owners who want
to go fast cruising and maybe racing, with deeper
keels, larger rigs, a carbon bowsprit and more
open cockpit thanks to the (optional) removal of
the rear seats and fixed table.
