(Jacob Rumans) #1
Hanse 348
This is the most recent boat to
be launched in Hanse’s ‘8’ series,
joining the 388, 418, 548 and 588.
It uses the same Judel/Vrolijk
hull from 2013 as the previous
345 model, but has a revamped
interior in the same style as the
other boats in the new range.
The appearance of the coachroof
windows has also been updated,
and there’s now a hull portlight
above each of the saloon settees.
Fit and finish reflects Hanse’s
push to move the brand more
upmarket. The galley, for instance,
has fittings close to those found in
a high-end domestic kitchen.

Wauquiez’s first all-new model for
almost a decade has a new hull and deck
by Olivier Racoupeau. The result is a
fabulous looking, superbly finished aft
cockpit boat that remains true to the
company’s heritage.
A proper pilot saloon, with a good view
of the outside whether you’re standing
up or sitting down, was a key design
prerequisite. High bulwarks and higher
than standard triple guard wires help to

give a sense of security when on deck.
Two- and three-cabin layouts are
offered, with the aft cabin of the two-
cabin boat being particularly impressive.
The pilot saloon seating is raised above
the saloon floor, which gives a view out
without demanding an unnecessarily high
coachroof.
Few boat builders successfully address
ventilation at sea. However, this model
has large dorades plus vents in each

This new model from the Discovery
Yachts Group is based on the original
Stephen Jones-designed lifting keel
Southerly 47 hull from 2013, but with a
new deck moulding and a proper pilot
saloon layout. The hull has also been
extended aft to create a fixed, closed
transom with the option of a fold-down
bathing platform.
Going forward from the cockpit feels
unusually secure thanks to the waist-high
solid grab rails on top of the pilot house,
higher than standard guardrails and
deep bulwarks. Headsail options include

side of the coachroof/coaming, seven
opening hatches and neatly concealed
underneath stainless steel panels with
the Wauquiez logo, to provide air to the
aft cabin(s). The pièce de résistance is
the electronically dimmable glass in the
coachroof windows that keeps the heat
of the sun off and creates privacy for the
interior without the need for blinds.
Many other aspects demonstrate a
level of attention to detail that costs
money, but make a huge difference
to life on board. That may also be the
biggest drawback of this yacht: a very
fully equipped boat is likely to work out at
around €500,000 ex VAT.

Southerly 480

a self-tacking jib on a second forestay
and a genoa on the main forestay. The
original twin rudder design is retained
and there’s a substantial skeg that
protects the propshaft instead of relying
on a P-bracket.
Inside the finish has been remodelled
and a colossal 11,000 hours of work now
goes into this boat. The sea-going layout
feels spacious and gives more room in
which to move around than the original
design. Neat touches include a heated
wet locker in the shower compartment of
the heads next to the companionway.
