for those travelling to Beaulieu Boatjumble

PBO contributor Keith Calton will be
attending the Boatjumble to showcase his
new stacking dinghy design.
Visitors can find Keith in the Trunk
Traders area, where he’ll also be selling
‘usual jumble stuff’. Primarily designed as
a tender for 26-30ft yachts, the 8ft dinghy
can be rowed, sailed or motored.
Keith said: “My stacking dinghy is almost
ready for production with my new-design
sleeved sail rig; the idea is to make it as
simple to rig as possible.”
Keith added: “I first designed the hull in
1980 after reading an article in PBO and
being inspired to make a boat out of two
sheets of ply with my brother. This led me
to create the stacking dinghy, although I
ran out of money and so the hull moulds
were left in a garden until I recently sold
my musical instrument case business and
had the time to finish it.”

Recycled sailcloth & charts
Artist Paddy Martin will be exhibiting at
Beaulieu Boatjumble for the first time with
his stunning paintings on recycled
sailcloth, and other recycled sailcloth
products: hand-painted bunting, and signs
made from recycled timber.
Paddy uses a technique that involves
sanding back initial paint layers to let light
shine through the sailcloth. He said: “I’ve
been painting for about 25 years but have
only been painting on sailcloth for the last
year or two and it’s absolutely taken off.
“I scrounge the cloth from sailmakers,
other sailors and friends. I put out a
Facebook request and got absolutely
inundated. A couple of times I’ve painted
boats for sailors
on their old sails,
and I’ve recently
used cloth from
1996 BT Global
Challenge boat.
Each sail has an
adventurous story
to tell.”
