What is the most interesting piece of
information you collected for this feature?
At the historic sale of Elizabeth Taylor’s
collection in 2011 some items went for
50 times their resale estimate
Did it change your view of auction houses?Yes. I am in awe of the knowledge
of the specialists, especially those who have been in the business for a long time
Are you a collector yourself?I wish I had an extensive collection of art. I buy
paintings when I can
What would you most like to own? It’s hard to narrow it down to one but I’d
happily collect a David Hockney, Miró or a Raphael. I also love Lucian Freud’s
whippet paintings and drawings

CONTRIBUTORS

Peter Howarth

A leading international marine writer
and photographer based in Auckland,
New Zealand, Ivor’s extensive sailing
experience includes a three-year
cruise from Scotland to New Zealand.
Among books he’s written are a
coee table tribute to New Zealand’s
magnificent fleet of classic boats and
a companion book on classic airplanes.

What did you like best about
Endless Summer? Her clean lines
and the variety of open air spaces

Where would you like to take
her cruising? I am drawn to places
of the beaten track, and Iceland
has always appealed
What is your favorite anchorage
in New Zealand? Fitzroy Harbour
on Great Barrier Island, but after
the summer rush is over
What notable superyachts have
come calling lately? The 218ft
pilothouse ketch Hetairos with her
classic lines hiding a yacht capable
of astonishing performance – superb

Chris is Boat International’s news
editor, and is most frequently seen
pacing the pontoons at worldwide
boat shows. This month he focuses
on the geographical spread of the
new-build sector (page 20).

What big changes have you noticed
in the global shipyard landscape?
The number of yards building yachts
over 80ft has shrunk over the past four
years (down 17 percent), but the
average number of projects has risen
by almost 28 percent
What does your
crystal ball tell you?
Breaking into the
new-build sector will
remain a big challenge,
and established names
will retain supremacy
When you build your
boat, where will you
go? I’ve always
dreamed of a compact
explorer, so the
Netherlands is the
obvious choice, but
there are a few Italian
yards doing great
work in this area too
