BELOW LEFT At the
Saryjaz river camp.

On every river, the kayakers stop frequently to assess
the next stage – frst, to gauge whether it is possible to
continue, then to look for the best route and where to set
up ropes to throw to a kayaker if it goes wrong.
“If you exit the kayak and can swim, there’s probably
another rapid downstream that you don’t want to swim
into,” says Ari. “Depending on the situation, you put
somebody to stand on the bank with rope that they can
throw you and you catch it and pendulum into the side.
Tere’s a lot more to it than that; it’s truly scary to get
right. A lot of times the water fows under rocks and
things which is the most dangerous situation.”
Meanwhile, they are also setting up cameras to
record the action.
