92 Boating New Zealand
Keeping one or more oil-absorbent mats in the
bilge under the engine is an easy, cheap solution.
Tese products soak up oil and other hydrocarbons
without absorbing any water.
And they’re capable of holding a large quantity
of oil relative to their size, with the ‘standard’ 40cm^2
mat (available from most boat chandlers) holding
just under a litre of oil. Being white, it also makes
any oil easily visible, so you’ll know if you have a leak
fairly smartly.
Te mats are also a useful component of an oil
spill kit, which every boatie should have on board.
If an accidental spill does occur, either out to sea or
on land, the mats can be thrown onto the heaviest
concentration to suck up most of the oil. A spill kit
should also include a sealable waste bag to hold the
dirty mats. A pair of gloves helps to keep you clean
while tackling the problem.
In addition to the fat mats, an oil-absorbent
‘sausage’ is also available. Tis is made of the same
material but shaped into a long foating sausage that
Internationally,
15 parts per million is
the maximum amount
of oil permitted to be
pumped overboard.
