An English lady asked when I was alongside
the marina in Gdansk, ‘By what authority
are you flying the blue ensign?’ I replied,
‘By virtue of a warrant from the admiralty
issued on their behalf by the Royal Highland
Yacht Club.’ She seemed well satisfied with
the answer.
However, there is a very widely held
misconception, both at home and abroad,
that it has something to do with being
a naval person. In Oslo in 2008, we were
having difficulty finding a marina berth to
accommodate our Najad 460, Morning Star,
and crossed to the other side of the fjord to
the Royal Norwegian Yacht Club, which also
had no available berths. The marina master,
who was on the arrivals pontoon and heard
us being refused, pointed to our blue ensign
and asked me if I had been in the Navy.
I confirmed that was the case. He had been
an officer in the Royal Norwegian Navy and
promptly found us a most convenient berth
for the remainder of our stay!
I think the reply of Mike Shrives in Any
Questions (YM, September 2017) ably sets
out the parameters, but woolly ideas have
not always been a disadvantage. Bob Craig
A sailor and a friend
Ken Trent, formerly of Thorpe Bay, Essex,
until he moved to Jersey has ‘crossed the
bar’ aged 95. A Second World War hero, he
piloted Lancaster bombers on 54 missions
and was involved with the Dambuster Raid.
He was awarded the Distinguished Flying
Cross twice. In another life, he sailed his 505
Vae Victis to win the cross-channel race in
the 1950s before going on to campaign his
locally built Vashti Class yacht, again called
Vae Victis, in the East Anglian Offshore
Racing Association’s series at Burnham-on-
Crouch over many years. He won many
trophies, including the Burnham Town Cup.
He was a larger-than-life character, a good
sailor and a fine companion. Terry Pond
Blooming marvellous
In the late 1940s, I worked on Yachting
Monthly with Maurice Griffiths and I have
read it ever since. I have just read the March
issue – absolutely blooming marvellous!
Terrific. Such interesting stuff, great authors,
good pictures, great layout. Thank you very
much indeed. By gum, you are giving us the
business. Lovely! Brian Pilcher
