The Classic version of

The Nordship offers a centre
cockpit and a raised saloon

The Malo 39 Classic is an ultra-seaworthy,
ocean passagemaker, capable of sailing
to windward in a gale while looking after
her crew. The only difference between the
Classic and Standard model is the former’s
afterdeck, which is 30cm longer and
replaces the transom step with a lazarette.
Though similar to other Scandinavian
yachts, a Malo is easily recognised by
its bower anchor protruding through the
stem and its GRP cockpit arch supporting
her mainsheet.

The 39 has earned a reputation for comfort,
style and solidity. Her wide clutter-free decks
and raised teak-capped bulwark offer
security on deck going forward and
her overall good looks. Many had teak
decks from new, so you need to look closely
at its condition before you put in an offer.
The Malo 39 has a bulletproof masthead
rig, with substantial standing rigging
including forward and aft lower shrouds,
which are securely tied into the hull
structure. Her cockpit is deep, with plenty

The Danish-built Nordship 38 DS is a centre-
cockpit deck saloon yacht that is built to take
its crew anywhere in a safe yet thoroughly
luxurious manner. While she might not be
the fastest yacht for her size, she has a
wonderful motion in a seaway and is
completely predictable under sail.
Having a proper deck saloon – that is one
where the saloon seating is raised to enable
a panoramic view outside – is a boon for

those cruising in areas where the scenery
is stunning but the weather not always ideal
for sitting in the cockpit. Better still, this
boat also has a well-equipped navigation
station in the raised saloon, enabling the
watchkeeper to keep a eye out from
below whilst plotting a fix on the chart.
She has a longitudinal galley a few
steps down from the saloon which is well
appointed with plenty of handy stowage.

of room around the wheel for the helmsman
to access all the sheets. Her rigid
windscreen and arch make a superb support
for a sprayhood and even a full cockpit tent.
Below, she has oodles of warm wood
and the veneers, being seriously thick,
can withstand more than one rubdown and
revarnish. All the edge trims and handholds
are beautifully finished in solid hardwood.
The U-shaped saloon settee allows four
to dine in comfort, six if the boat has the
standard straight settee opposite. However,
many owners opted to have two armchairs
in which to relax when off watch.
Her forecabin boasts a sumptuous vee
berth with an abundance of lockers above
and drawers below. The optional second
heads, immediately adjacent, does, however,
steal stowage from the forecabin. Aft layout
options include a single cabin with a
generously proportioned double berth
or twin double cabins.
Her L-shaped galley is compact but
safe for use underway. Though separated
from the salon with a tall half-bulkhead,
it does restrict access to the aft cabin when
in use. Opposite is a splendid forward-facing
navigation station with a large chart table
and bags of instrumentation space.

Headroom is also excellent and, being in
a corridor enables the cook to lean back
against the bulkhead for support. The
heads are opposite, right beside the large
forecabin. The couple would be impressed,
too, with the vast, centreline aft-cabin berth,
roomy ensuite and ample stowage for
clothing, footwear and smaller items.
There’s also comfortable seating in the
corridor aft, giving you a totally private suite.
Her stout masthead rig is tall, giving her
a generous sail area to power her along, and
high bows and topsides do an excellent job
of protecting the crew from spray or waves.
She has a sturdy bow plank that holds the
anchor roller well off the stem and clear of
the headsail furler, simplifying the handling
of her ground tackle. A stern rail gate and
transom step offer easy access to the sea
and facilitate boarding from a dinghy.
A powerful 55hp Volvo diesel gives
her plenty of punch against a foul tide, but
her high topsides and saildrive transmission
with the prop a long way forward from the
rudder might necessitate a bow thruster
for stress-free close-quarter manoeuvrability.
