Position reporting/ polling
Some Inmarsat-C equipment can be programmed to insert your
ship's position on every message, automatically. Equipment can also be
programmed to transmit position reports, automatically, at regular times,
to a specified address (or addresses) ashore. Arrangements can also be
made (with a LES operator) for the shore office to be able to poll the
ship - sending a short message that will cause the position to be
transmitted from the vessel on demand with no action being required by
the onboard operator. This is the way position reports are received by
race control centres during round-the-world yacht races and can be added
automatically to a world map for office use, or for presentation on the
world wide web/television. Once enabled by tie LES Operator, polling
can be carried out to a single vessel, or to a group of vessels
Simultaneously, when required.
