Hazard warning labels should be displayed:

  • At the normal operating position.

    • On the antenna.

  • At locations around the antenna (to warn against entering the
    hazardous area).

On some vessels, a number ofInmarsat-A/B/M terminals may be
multiplexed into a single large antenna Uust like high bandwidth satellite
systems - figure 8.l0). Where an antenna is noticeably larger than the
standard Inmarsat-A/ B antenna, the hazard area will be considerably
greater. Satellite TV antennas, being receive-only - do not present a
radiation hazard.

Inmarsat-A/Inmarsat-B Equipment Set up

In addition to acquiring the satellite and setting ship's head if
available on your own equipment, the types of item you may be able to
set up in your Inmarsat-A and/or InmarsatlB equipment includes:
A preferred LES for each Ocean Region (satellite).
A default priority for all calls (usually Routine).

  • A preferred LES for Distress Calls.
All Inmarsat-B, and some Inmarsat-A units can be programmed
with a preferred LES for each Ocean Region (satellite). With older types
of Inmarsat-A equipment this preferred LES may not be an option - in
which case you will need to select the LES ID for each individual call (as
part of the two stage connection process described in Chapters 4 and 5).
Even where a preferred LES is programmed you can override this
selection, on Inmarsat-A and Inmarsat-B equipment - for any particular

call-using a simple procedure described in your equipment manual. In

addition to 'preferred LES' some equipment allows you to programme

the default priority for each call-that priority normally being 'Routine'

The Inmarsat satellite system as a whole only operates using
two priorities - routine and distress. If your equipment apparently
offers Urgency and Safety and you select either of those priorities,
your call will normally be treated as Routine by the satellite/LES

system. It is possible to set up speCial terrestrial network arrangements

through a particular LES, which will then recognise Urgency and Safety
priorities (see your equipment manual for details).
You should check your equipment user manual for any other set
up procedures required for your particular unit.
