Ian Waugh - A Mariner\'s Guide to Marine Communications

(John Hannent) #1

FlB
Radio telex, NAVTEX and DSC 'class of emission'

FEe
'Forward Error Correction' - a method identifying errors in reception
of a radio-telex (NBDP) broadcast (e.g., a NAVTEX message).

FleetNET
An Inmarsat 'broadcast' service for ship owners/ managers - allowing
them to send the same message to a number of ships Simultaneously.
(Note that FleetNET is a service mark of the Inmarsat organisation).
GMDSS
The Global Maritime Distress and Safety System.

GMDSS Master Plan
An IMO (International Maritime Organisation) publication documenting
the state of development of the GMDSS.

Ground Wave
Method of radio wave propagation used at Medium Frequency.

H3E
Single sideband Voice, Full Carrier - used on your SSB radio when
receiving 'broadcast' stations (e.g., the BBC World Service).

Hertz
'Cycles per second' - the measure of frequency for radio transmissions.
kiloHertz (kHz) - thousands of cycles per second; MegaHertz (MHz) - millions
of cycles per second; GigaHertz (GHz) even more than millions (see Appendix
IV). The term was changed from cycles-per-second to Hertz in the 1960s, in
recognition of work done by Heinrich Hertz - the first person to demonstrate
the production and detection of electromagnetic waves (in the 1880s).

IAMSAR Manual
The International Aeronautical and Maritime Search and Rescue Manual
(replaced the MERSAR Manual-Merchant Shipping Search and Rescue
Manual in 1998). Produced in three volumes; Volume 1 discusses the
global SAR system concept including how neighbouring states can
cooperate to provide effective SAR services; Volume 11 is deSigned to
assist the planning and coordination of SAR operations and exercises;
and Volume III is intended to be carried onboard SAR craft and ships at
sea and explains on-scene coordination, search patterns and other items
relevant to ships involved in SAR operations either as the ship with the
problem or when assisting in a SAR operation.
