SafetyNET
The Inmarsat service for promulgating Maritime Safety Information.
(Note that SafetyNET is a service mark of the Inmarsat organisation).
SAR Operation
Search and Rescue operation (for vessels in Distress or with other urgent
problems concerning the safety of the vessella person).
SART
A 'Search And Rescue (radar) Transponder' - a device to aid the locating
of a distressed vessel or person, in an emergency.
SCC
The Inmarsat Satellite Control Centre - used to keep the satellites at
their designated 'slot' above the equator.
Securite
The voice 'Safety' signal (the French word for 'safety' used directly).
Silence Distress
Used, during distress working, by a station other than the controlling
station, to impose silence on an interfering station (the French word
'silence' being pronounced phonetically as 'seelonce').
Silence Fini
(a French expression pronounced 'Seelonce Feenee') used, by the
controlling station, to signal that distress working has ended and that
normal working may resume.
Silence Mayday
(pronounced 'Seelonce Mayday') - used, during distress working, by
the controlling station (Le. the vessel in distress or any coast station or
OSC that may be controlling distress working) to impose silence on an
interfering station.
SELCAL Number
An individual numerical identity for use with radio telex, and with
'selective calling' devices ('SELCAL' devices preceded DSC and may
be attached to some VHF or MF IHF SSB radio equipment).
Selectivity
The ability of a radio receiver to 'pick-out' a desired signal from other
signals that may be very close to the wanted signal.
