Ian Waugh - A Mariner\'s Guide to Marine Communications

(John Hannent) #1
Systems section) shows a Ship

Reporting System to be

operational in the UK only.

That 'MAREP' system is

voluntary and only applies to
vessels in the English Channel
and is not relevant to our
route. The only system we
need to report into for this
route, therefore, is the
AMVER system (if our vessel
participates in AMVER)

Systems; Port Operations

The ALRS Vol. 6 entry
for Las Palmas (Puerto de la
Luz) explains that we should
contact the pilot office - call
'Practicos Las Palmas' - on

Ch 16 , one hour before

leaving. The entry also shows
the working channels for
Practicos Las Palm as to be
Ch12 and Ch14. The Port
office also expects calls on
Ch16, and works on Ch12.
Tugs work on Ch14. Pilotage
is available 'H24' (24 hours
each day).

Port

HF DSC Stations (from ALRS Vo!. 5)

The entry for our destination port - Reykjavik - shows the
preferred calling channels for Pilots and Port to be Ch12 (although
they also listen on Ch 16). Working channels are Ch 12 and Ch 17. Like
Las Palmas, service is available 'H24' 'Pilotage is compulsory for

vessels over 60m in length 'ETA must be sent 24 hours in advance

of arrival (this will have to be by telephone call over Inmarsat or HF
SSB Radio - we will not be in VHF range of the port office at this
stage) and we need to call direct on Ch12/Ch17, three hours ahead of
arrival.
