Restauratie Salonboot "Sally"
2016
SALLY
But then in 1998, Cees and his wife moved to
Mallorca and sold Sally to a family friend who, three
years later, also moved to Mallorca and sold Sally.
The new owner was Olympia Charter who used her
for wedding parties as well as canal charters.
And then, in 2015, Cees returned to Holland once
more and saw Sally again. “She was in an absolutely
terrible state which made my heart bleed,” he says, “and
I had to buy her back.” But this time he was determined
to make sure the work was done thoroughly and to help
this process along, he asked Oliver van Meer to look
after the project management and the technical work.
Sally was taken to Scheepswerf Stallinga in Leiden
where almost everything apart from the saloon
superstructure was stripped off. This allowed repairs
to be carried out to the hull plating and frames, around
20 per cent of which was renewed, mainly underwater.
The forward cabin’s steel coachroof top was also
replaced. The saloon roof was sheaved in glass and
epoxy, the whole original teak superstructure was
re-varnished and re-glazed with 8mm toughened glass,
and the doors at each end of the saloon were renewed.
A new traditional skylight was made for the forward
cabin very similar to the old one and a more practical
arrangement was created in the centre cockpit around
the wheel, with a small seat in traditional style.
The layout of the engine space – below the cockpit –
was redesigned and the only item of equipment retained
there was the engine. It was thoroughly overhauled
before it was reinstalled, along with the drive train, and
a keel cooler was added to avoid potential problems with
the engine sucking up muddy water in the shallow areas
