Vicky Kaushal

Rajkummar Rao,
Vicky Kaushal,
Ayushmann
Khurrana... have
been able to pull
off narratives
where the hero
is someone,
who mirrors the
common man.
Sejal Shah, Mumbai

Kudos to Vijay
Maur ya for not
indulging in cuss
words and abuses
in his dialogue for
Gully Boy, even
though it captured
the underbelly of
Mumbai.
Rehan Ashraf, Nagpur

Though heroines
look all-glam in
gowns, it must be
torturous for them
to sit in them at
events.
Rubina Khan, Indore

Sahir Ludhianvi’s
lyrics Woh subah
kabhi to aayegi
echoes the socio-
political turmoil of
the current times.
Ranjan Dutt, Lucknow

GRAND EDITION
I consider Filmfare
Awards to be on a
higher level than the
Oscar for its Indian-
ness. Seasoned and
new entrants both rub
shoulders to create
memories. Rightfully, the
Lifetime Achievement
Award was given to the
late Sridevi. Dream Girl
Hema Malini deser ved
an award for 50 years of
Outstanding Contribution
to Cinema. She has
beautiful shades as an
actor, dancer, filmmaker
and politician.
Prem K Menon, Mumbai

LATA FOREVER
Lata Mangeshkar shot
to popularity with the
Raj Kapoor- Nargis
starrer Barsaat (1949).
Booklets of the hit
songs, written by Hasrat
Jaipuri and Shailendra
and composed by
Shankar-Jaikishen,
were sold outside the
theatres. Musicals
Awara, Shri 420 and
Chori Chori followed.
Her voice suited Nargis
per fectly. Miss those
golden melodies.
S.S.Gattani, Amravati

BEAUTY GETS REAL
Beauty means a big
deal in showbiz. But
today actresses are
letting go of vanity
to look their part.
In Meghna Gulzar’s
Chhapaak, Deepika
Padukone plays acid-
sur vivor Laxmi Agar wal.
Her stills from the film
show her in a stark
avatar. Bhumi Pednekar
has also played de-glam
roles in Dum Laga Ke
Haisha, Sonchiriya and
the upcoming Saand
Ki Aankh, where she

MOUTH WATERING
The gift hampers that
accompanied the star
invites for the Filmfare
Awards were so
tempting. Having a fetish
for all the good things
in life, I felt so envious.
I hope someday we
readers can enjoy the
hamper as well.

ACTORS OVER
STARS
The Indian audience
has matured, accepting
content over glamour.
The 64th Vimal Filmfare
Awards 2019 went
ahead and affirmed
this truth by awarding
offbeat cinema
and per formances.
Choosing Alia Bhatt
in the small film
Raazi over Deepika
Padukone in the grand
Padmaavat, Neena
Gupta (Badhaai Ho)
over Anushka Sharma
(Sui Dhaaga: Made In
India), Meghna Gulzar
(Raazi) over Rajkumar
Hirani (Sanju), Surekha
Sikri (Badhaai Ho) over
Katrina Kaif (Zero)... it
drew a beautiful analogy
among equals, without
getting pressured
by the stature of the
nominees. Well done!

MULTIPLEX WOES
Multiplexes are charging
exorbitant ticket
prices. Even in a non-
metro city like Nagpur,
tickets range between
` 350 to ` 600. The
tickets are cheaper
in single screens
but there are hardly
such good theatres.
Perhaps, that’s why
big-budget films like
Thugs of Hindustan,
Zero, Race 3, Namaste
England and Kalank
flopped. Low-budget
films like Badhaai Ho,
AndhaDhun, Stree,
Badla, Raazi, Gully
Boy and Uri : The
Surgical Strike proved
profitable because
of their content and
affordable tickets. With
OTT platforms gaining
popularity, multiplexes
need to review their
pricing.

The winners

playsanoctogenarian
shooter. Alia Bhatt’s
earthy portrayal in Udta
Punjab, Aishwar ya Rai
Bachchan’s mellow
look in Sarbjit prove
that the image of the
heroine has undergone
a mature overhaul.
