Push-button starters on the twin Suzuki’s fired the
enginesintolife,idlingsilently.It wasshortworkwith
twin screws to motor away from the dock and out
towardsBotanyBayforourseatest.
Beforepointingthenoseoffshore,wecompletedspeed
andfuelusagetrialsin thequietwatersaroundKurnell.
Suzuki’s new four-litre V6, 4-stroke engines have
massesof low-downgruntthatat 2400rpmquicklyhad
usplaningat 12knots(23km/h),withfuelusetotalling
30L/h.Theoptimumcruisewasat 26knots(48km/h),
witha totalfueluseof 50L/h.Topspeedwas 41 knots,with150L/hpassing
throughtheinjectorsto delivera sweetwailfromtheexhaust.
Handlingin calmwaterwasimpressive.Full-lockturnsat 26knotswere
smoothand worry-free.Evenfrom thehigherposition of theflybridge
helmtherewasn’tanyexcessiveleanoranywallowingorshudder.
Onceoffshore,wefaceda 12-to 15-knotbreezekickingupa short1m
sea,butweeasilycutthroughat speedsupto 22knots(47km/h)without
excessive banging. The deep-veedesign provedits worth and thefull
flaretookcareof spray,sendingit wideof thehull.
