British Rail - The Blue & Grey Years in Colour| THE RAILWAY MAGAZINE 3

The Woodhead Route, with its spectacular
scenery and foreign-looking DC electrics, still
holds a special place in the hearts of many
enthusiasts almost 40 years after its closure.
The Woodhead Tunnels gained an almost iconic
status, and it is here that a pair of the line’s
Class 76s emerge westbound from the ‘new’
tunnel with a coal train on September 22, 1979.
Note the two fenced-off portals of the ‘old’
tunnel on the left. JOHN COOPER-SMITH
